If you have been online for any amount of time you know that there are more and more threats that pop up everyday it seems. It’s important to protect your computer from these threats but not all users know how with so many different threats coming out. I’ve composed a list of the most needed software for any computer that is connected to the internet. Even new computers may not have this software installed and it’s important to get all the protection you can these days.
A Good Anti Virus Program
Having an anti virus on your computer is essential because many viruses steal personal data and send it back to the creator of the virus usually. This can lead to identity theft and they could conceivably take control of your bank accounts or other financial accounts that you access online.
A Firewall Program
Having a firewall basically stops incoming connections to your computer. It’s almost like putting up a fence around your house would be a good analogy. It’s meant to block intruders and protect your PC. Windows has a built in firewall but it may not be activated.
Usually spyware protection is bundled with anti virus programs but I thought it might be a good idea to list it here since some anti virus programs don’t include and it may lead to a false sense of security.
Turn on Automatic Updates
There are new vulnerabilities that come out everyday and software vendors try and issue updates or patches to protect you. This is way it’s important to turn on automatic updates so you know you are protected from the latest threats. Use automatic updates on all your security software including firewall, anti virus, and spyware protection. Also make sure your operating system has automatic updates turned on.
These four tips can help save you loads of headaches in the future in case a virus or other malware was to attack your computer. Some of these products are bundled together and can all be purchased and installed at once. There are free versions of firewall, anti virus, and spyware protection available also. Some popular companies that offer these free versions are Zone Labs, AVG, Avira, Spybot Search and Destroy, and Malware Bytes you’ll just have to look at each and decide for yourself.
