On September 11, America commemorates the World Trade Center, Pentagon and United Flight 93 attacks. We each remember sad events in different ways. Evangelical Pastor Terry Jones of Florida is hosting ‘Burn a Koran Day’ on September 11, 2010 to honor those who perished in the 9/11 terrorist attacks 9 years ago.
The questions and problems inherent with Pastor Terry Jones September 11 ‘Burn a Koran Day’ are many. Least problematic of the questions: how does a book-burning, especially the burning of a book considered sacred millions of people, honor the deceased? Pastor Terry Jones September 11 ‘Burn a Koran Day’ is more rightly a retaliation against Muslims. And how can you retaliate against those involved in the 9/11 attacks by burning the Koran (Qu’ran)?
Next issue with Pastor Terry Jones and his September 11 ‘Burn a Koran Day’: Book-burning is an act of totalitarianism. Book burning smacks of Nazi Germany, Kirstallnacht, Idi Amin, Mussolini and McCarthyism. Book burning is a lesser form of terrorist attack in itself.
Next question for Pastor Terry Jones and his September 11 ‘Burn a Koran Day’: America is based upon freedom of religion. It’s written in our Bill of Rights. Isn’t it a perversion of the constitution to burn another religion’s holy book? Many Christians took part in slavery and abuse of native Americans over the years. Should African Americans and Native Americans burn the Bible to honor their deceased loved ones?
Last question for Pastor Terry Jones and his September 11 ‘Burn a Koran Day’: Why would you put American troops and citizens living overseas at great personal risk by igniting (literally) a possible riot? General Petraeus has warned you of the obvious and inevitable, Pastor Jones. He asked you not to incite violence with your ‘Burn a Koran Day’. Are you willing to endanger more innocent lives?
If you agree with any or all of these questions, and that Pastor Terry Jones and his September 11 ‘Burn a Koran Day’ is an outrage and potentially dangerous, sign the petition here to send Pastor Terry Jones a clear message that he does not speak for America with his September 11 ‘Burn a Koran Day’. The Obama Administration is urging American citizens to sign. And let us hope and pray that this danger to our troops, our ethics and moral fiber may be averted.
