A Georgia rally is about to put the Eddie Long scandal front and center again. As the rally grows in protest against Bishop Long’s position within New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, the scandal is expected to explode to newer heights. Dallas talk show host, Reuben Armstrong, explained what makes this rally against Eddie Long so important in our nation.
Four young men came forward in September, alleging that Eddie Long used his position within the church to gain sexual favors from them. He provided them with indulgent gifts and vacations in exchange for using the men for sex. Now a rally is scheduled to protest Bishop Long’s position.
The Georgia rally will take place at the State Capitol in Atlanta on Oct. 31 at 2:00 p.m. It’s headed by Bishop Prophet H. Walker of True Light Pentecostal Church in South Carolina and Reuben Armstrong will be a strong voice in the gathering as protesters unite from around the country, even the world.
Youth Pastors Reached Out to Reuben Armstrong in 2006
Reuben Armstrong wrote a book titled, “Snakes in the Pulpit,” in 2007. It’s an Essence Magazine bestseller, which exposes church leaders engaged in deceptive practices over their followers. Eddie Long was one of the Bishops named in his book. In 2006, two youth pastors confided in Armstrong their witness accounts of Eddie Long’s extravagant gestures towards young men in their New Birth congregation in Atlanta.
“They saw him paying for expensive trips and gifts,” Armstrong said of Eddie Long. ” As a cover-up, he would refer to them as his ‘spiritual sons’ or their ‘daddy.”
“People go to church to meet people or meet a mate,” the talk show host said. “Not to be manipulated.”
Eddie Long Has a Lot of Power in the Community
You may wonder why the scandal of Eddie Long was exposed in late September, years after the youth pastors reached out to Reuben Armstrong. The men coming forward feared the consequences of accusing the Bishop.
“They were scared,” Armstrong said. “He’s a man with a lot of power.”
Eddie Long is someone with “powerful connections.” In many cases, large congregations that have reached a stratospheric status manage to be part of a “corporate entity,” rather than being about God’s word. It’s a system that promotes a “blab it and grab it” motto from church leaders while “shareholders aren’t paid any dividends.”
As the Protest Nears, the Scandal will Explode – Will Eddie Long Take a Solid Stand?
Why isn’t Eddie Long taking a stand by admitting or denying the allegations before him? Is it appropriate he remain a church leader while such a controversy stares him in the face, as well as the nation’s?
As the rally in Georgia nears, the scandal surrounding Eddie Long will explode. The protest signifies a demand for a leader in Bishop Long’s position to do what’s right and spare more scandals like this from continuing.
