The Arroyo Seco American Viticultural Area (AVA) is a wine appellation located in Monterey County, California. Consisting of over 42,000 acres, the Arroyo Seco AVA’s soil and climate are excellent for growing wine grapes, including Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Viognier, Cabernet Sauvignon, and others. This California AVA, established in 1983, is encompassed completely by the larger Monterey AVA, which is in turn part of the Central Coast AVA, both in California. Founded in 1972 with 280 acres of grapes, the vineyards are well known for their Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Noir and Valdiguie grapes. The red wines of this Arroyo Seco winery are created from its vineyards in Paso Robles, California, where Cabernet, Merlot, Zinfandel and other grapes are grown. Be sure to try their J. All of their wines are estate grown and bottled from their California vineyard, which was first planted in 1974. The Arroyo Seco AVA is well known as one of the best Chardonnay growing regions in the world, and this vineyard also grows Syrah, Gewurztraminer and other grape varietals. Wente Vineyards. The country’s oldest continuously operated winery, Wente Vineyards was founded more than 125 years ago. This Arroyo Seco winery creates its award winning wines from its 3,000 acres of grapes, all of which are farmed with sustainable practices. Wente Vineyards was the first California winery to produce a Chardonnay, way back in 1936. Be sure to sample their Reliz Creek Pinot Noir 2007, a spicy red wine that has aromas of black cherry and vanilla, followed by flavors that include stone fruits and oak. Also try their 2008 Riva Ranch Chardonnay, a medium bodied white wine with aromas that include honey and floral, and flavors of vanilla and butter.
