I played the first Fable game and thought it was pretty good and innovative. I played Fable II and loved the graphics but was less impress with the innovations. After playing Fable III, I am proud to say the Fable franchise has taken its biggest, boldest, and most enjoyable step forward with Fable III for the Xbox 360.
If you are a fan of the series, you’ll love Fable III, if you are new or previously not a big fan of the Fable franchise, I would encourage you to give Fable III a shot. The story this time takes us to Albion once again, but if you played Fable II your character is not a part of this game. However the sons you spawned at the end of Fable II are now running things, well one of the sons, the oldest son who has gone mad with power is running Albion into ruin.
You play as the good son, or as good as you want to be, as you take up the quest to dethrone your evil brother and save Albion and all its citizens from a future ruled by your oppressive brother.
The graphics are great, really enjoyable, reminds me of a recent Zelda game but on steroids. The voice acting and sounds are marvelous, really capturing this mythical world of Albion and its many inhabitants. The game play, while not revolutionary is fun and familiar with new some new twists and interactivity that at times makes Fable III feel more like a Sims game, which is a good thing.
The controls are decent, a bit iffy when trying to auto target which can get annoying because the fighting is rather intense in this game, much more so than in previous Fable games.
Another potential sore spot for fans of the game is the lack of choice in how the main story plays out, and while you have a lot of freedom to do what you want, the way it will effect your good or bad karma isn’t as pronounce as one would like. As long as you stick to completing the main tasks you can pretty much be a homicidal maniac the rest of the time without long term consequence.
If you can put up with the lacking moral choices balance and the clunky combat controls, I think you’ll find a lot to love in Fable III; I give it a 4 / 5.
