The social media giant, Facebook, recently acquired Vinegar Hill file-sharing company Drop.io. The Los Angeles Times referred to the purchase as a “talent acquisition.” The owner of Drop.io, Sam Lessin, is a Harvard alum and friend of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.
According to David Kilpatrick’s book “The Facebook Effect,” Lessin helped Zuckerberg to meet venture capitalists and media executives back in 2004. He also worked with Joe Green who went on to form Causes with former Facebook President Sean Parker.
On the Jay Street company’s blog, they recently posted: “Today, we’re proud to announce that we’ve struck a deal with Facebook. What this means is that Facebook has bought most of drop.io’s technology and assets, and Sam Lessin is moving to Facebook.”
Drop.io allows users to exchange files provately. The “drops” are non-searchable, non-networked, and can be password protected and set to expire after a certain date.
