Warnings are now being passed to our military that a Facebook feature could possibly allow the enemy to pinpoint their exact locations but nothing much is being said about email addresses being used illegally by marketing firms who have purchased them. Facebook has not been forthcoming on ending this practice or protecting its users.
“The Air Force is warning its troops to be careful when using Facebook and other popular networking sites because some new features could show the enemy exactly where U.S. forces are located in war zones .” “In a warning issued on its internal website earlier this month, the Air Force said that “careless use of these services by airmen can have devastating operations security and privacy implications.” “The applications, which are offered by a variety of services including Facebook, Foursquare, Gowalla and Loopt, can identify a person’s location, even pinpoint it on a map.” “A key concern is that enemy forces could use such features to track troops in the war zone who have a Blackberry or other smart phone and use those networking services.” (Baldor, Lolita C., 11/17/2010, Associated Press, Air Force warns troops about Facebook feature, Retrieved from email@example.com ).
It will be interesting to see how Facebook addresses this problem, if it really does exist but the fact that people in my address book are now receiving Viagra advertisement as if it is coming from me really do exist. Some Facebook users thought that it was just a fluke until I mentioned it to Facebook on their site, then I began to receive emails from friends which were sent under their names but without their permission. It is very well understood that technology advances and with it comes new issues which can only be fixed when it surfaces. No one knows how long the issue of emails addresses being sold to marketing agencies allowing them access to users address book has been happening and no one seems to know when this will cease. I now have to wonder if the same will be said about the possibility of enemy forces to locate our soldiers, sailors and marines on the battlefield will stop as well.
