Entertaining toddler and preschoolers can be challenging when going outdoors is not an option. For fall days that are too cool to be outside, here are a few fun activities to share with your toddler or preschooler.
Toddler and preschoolers love to be “big helpers”. Here is a chocolate cookie recipe that is easy enough that even a toddler can help with!
1 pkg devils food cake mix
½ c. oil
1 c. chocolate chips
Mix cake mix, eggs and oil. Stir in the chocolate chips. Mixture will be stiff. Shape dough into small balls. Place 2 inches apart on cookie sheet and bake at three hundred fifty degrees for 10 to 12 minutes.
Have your toddler help you with the easier parts, like dumping in the chocolate chips and shaping the dough into small balls. Let them watch through the oven window while the cookies bake. Then enjoy eating the cookies with a glass of milk!
Playing and shaping with play dough helps to spark a toddler or preschooler’s imagination. Have different ideas ready for them to sculpt that are appropriate for their age and talent. Some ideas are snakes, pizzas, or balls. Have even more fun by making your own play dough with your toddler. Here is an easy recipe for you to try.
4 c. flour
3 T. corn oil
2 c. boiling water
1 T. alum
½ c. salt
Combine flour, salt and alum. Stir in water, then oil; mix well. Blend a few drops of food coloring. Keep in covered container in refrigerator. ** Can add glitter for an extra sparkle!
Toddlers love to create and also make a mess! Spread a few newspapers or old blankets on the floor and over a table. Find an old paint shirt of yours and let your child have the fun of his life! Here is a recipe for your own homemade finger paint. If you have an older child involved give some ideas as to what to draw such as a house, a family pet, or a picture of themselves.
½ c. cornstarch
2 c. cold water
Mix cornstarch and cold water together well. Bring to a boil and thicken in a saucepan. Cool completely. Add food coloring of your choice to mixture or divide mixture to make several different colors.
