Our Fall Wedding on the Monterey, CA Peninsula
Our small, intimate fall wedding took place in Monterey, CA on October 9, 2004. Both my husband-to-be and I had been widowed in 2002 following long and wonderful marriages. We met in 2003 and felt very blessed to have found happiness again after so much grief.
We didn’t want a large wedding, just a small, intimate fall wedding to include the immediate family and a few of our closest friends.
St. Timothy Lutheran Church, Monterey
We selected my husband’s church, St. Timothy Lutheran, for the wedding ceremony. It’s a small, pretty church, perfect, we thought, for the size of our wedding. A friend, retired newspaper photographer Chuck Scardina, photographed our wedding and reception.
Fall Wedding Reception Venues
When you’re planning a fall wedding it’s important to look at a number of wedding reception venues to determine the one best suited for your gathering. Including ourselves there were 38 people on our list. We wanted a lovely sit-down dinner in a romantic location. We finally selected the Martine Inn, an elegant and beautiful Victorian Bed and Breakfast Inn in Pacific Grove, CA, near Monterey. It’s the only B&B in the area that has a longtime chef and facilities to hold wedding dinners and other special events. Except for breakfast for inn guests it’s only open to groups for special occasions.
The inn’s dining room overlooks Monterey Bay and the rocky coastline of Pacific Grove. Our wedding menu was prepared from old 1880’s “White House” cookbooks adapted for current tastes. Our dinner was served on fine 1800’s style porcelain. Victorian and Old Sheffield silver tableware sets graced the tables and the flatware was Gorham’s 1896 Lancaster Rose sterling silver. The service included asparagus tongs, fruit knives and warm spoons presented from 1880’s Victorian silver spoon warmers.
A classical guitarist added to the romantic ambiance. The gentleman who played for us has either retired or left the area but there are other world-class guitarists available such as Terrence Farrell who played for our engagement party a year earlier. (He was unavailable on our wedding day.)
All in all, our small, intimate fall wedding was everything we could have hoped for.
