Good old friend Chad Pennington is back as a starter with the Miami Dolphins after head coach Tony Sparano finally decided to bench struggling starter Chad Henne this week. The now 34 year old Pennington will get the start against the tough Tennessee Titans this week and is in charge of trying to salvage their season. With QB injuries (Tony Romo, Matthew Stafford etc) playing havoc with fantasy football rosters lately the question certainly can be asked: is Chad Pennington worthy of being added as a starter for your team? Lets break it down shall we?
The last time we saw Chad Pennington in an extended look as a starter, he led the Miami Dolphins to the playoffs with a 10-6 record while recording 19 TD’s with only 7 picks for more than 3,600 yards. Very solid stats indeed and surely more than a few players of fantasy football used him along the way. As I said earlier, Pennington is now 34 years old which is getting up there but its also not ancient by any means. On that aspect alone, Pennington should be just fine. However if you dig a little deeper, we get to the crux of the issue.
For one, Pennington has never been a big “numbers” guy and by that I mean he hasnt produced eye popping (or fantasy football worthy if you will) TD and yardage totals. In fact Pennington has only thrown for more than 20 TD’s, which is the fantasy football benchmark as a starter in my book, once and that was all the way back in 2002-2003 when he tossed 22. He also has never cracked the 4,000 yard passing mark in any season. Thats certainly two big shortfalls when it comes to evaluating his ability to make a difference on your fantasy football roster. There is no doubt that Pennington is capable of having a big game on any given week but there is also no doubt that he wont be putting up those kind of outings often enough.
All in all I think Chad Pennington is stictly a matchup play at this point and should not be relied on as your fantasy football starting option. There are just not enough numbers in the key categories to keep you competitive in his position week after week. Nice guy and certainly a nice player but not for our make believe game.
