Our City Hall will be under going some major renovations on the second floor for the next two to three months. Workers are installing a handicapped-accessible elevator and reorganizing the second floor to include a single counter to serve the residents of Ferndale and updates to the Internet and communications infrastructure.
While the renovations are taking place, the offices on the second floor will be temporarily moved to the first floor including the treasurer, clerk and city manager’s offices until the work is finished sometime in November or December.
Even though our city of Ferndale is experiencing budget issues due to the lack of property taxes and high unemployment, the city does have a public improvement fund they are dipping into to make the half-million dollars worth of renovations with. Not everyone on the City Council was on board ,as the vote for the improvements were pretty split: 3-2 in favor of the renovations.
I think as long as they are not dipping into the general fund, and if that money in the improvement fund cannot be reallocated to the general fund, then I have no problems with the renovations. Having a handicapped-accessible elevator is crucial. Hopefully the Lake Orion company awarded the contract spends some of those profits in Ferndale to help out the ailing businesses.
