The city of Ferndale will most likely get its animal control services through Oakland County starting in 2011. City commissioners found out recently that although Ferndale residents pay into the county-wide program, they do not get services from it.
Ferndale residents’ tax dollars go into the county-wide program, yet currently they pay for animal control for the city on their own as well. Other cities in the county, including Auburn Hills and Farmington Hills, get their services through the county already, which means they only pay for animal control once, not twice.
The discrepancy was discovered over the last few weeks, when city commissioners started asking questions. At first, they didn’t believe that that was the way the program was working, until finding out how it was benefitting other cities in Oakland County. They promptly protested, and the county has agreed to cover Ferndale as well, most likely beginning next year.
