Oprah Winfrey interviewed Barbra Streisand on her show on November 16th. Barbra mentioned how difficult it is for her to sing before a live audience. She has had this fear throughout her career. Fortunately, Oprah convinced her to sing The Way We Were for Oprah’s audience. It was magnificent.
After the song, Oprah and Barbra spoke about the movie since scenes of The Way We Were played during her performance. Oprah asked Barbra if she and Robert Redford were ever interviewed together. Barbra said No.
That is when Robert Redford walked in on the interview to the audience’s delight and to mine. The chemistry between the two that Oprah had mentioned earlier was present in the room. You could feel it.
The three of course talked about that classic movie. Robert said that he has never watched the completed movie. Also, he turned down the part several times before director Sydney Pollack convinced him to take it. Barbra said she had always wanted to do a sequel, but Robert did not agree that it would be a worthwhile endeavor.
Robert was asked about his independent film company Sundance. It came about, he said, because he did not want to just keep doing movie after movie. He felt it was time to give back, to help young artists. That is how Sundance came to be. When Robert Redford left the interview, he and Barbra kissed and you could read Barbra’s lips saying I Love You. What a great coup for Oprah to have brought them together for this interview.
Oprah then told her audience about Barbra’s first book, entitled My Passion for Design. Barbra designed the house that she and James Brolin, her husband of 12 years, live in now. We were shown pictures inside and outside of the house. There is a barn on the property and they have also added a pond. Barbra likes to use another building, their guest house, to record her songs. Everyone in the audience received a copy of Barbra’s book.
I happened upon this show while surfing the Internet. It is probably one of the classic interviews of all time. The Way We Were is probably my favorite movie of all time. Click here to read my review of The Way We Were.
