Five Guys Burgers and Fries has recently opened a restaurant in Gurnee Illinois. Located at 6310 Grand Avenue, this is a great location only minutes from I94 and about midway between Chicago and Milwaukee. Gurnee is also a major shopping area and a favorite stop for both visitors and recruits coming and going from Great Lakes Naval Base.
I was excited to try Five Guys having read some of the hype about this new burger shop that is rocking the burger business across the nation. I had read that Five Guys is also President Obama’s favorite hamburger stop and I just had to see what the hype was all about.
Five guys décor was a little like Steak and Shake but you order at the counter and wait for your number to be called. The perimeter of the restaurant was lined with huge bags of real potatoes waiting to be turned into French Fries and I was anxious to see if those were as good as advertised.
The walls of the restaurant are plastered with big signs advertising the quotes of reviewers across the country and what they had to say about the quality, ingredients, burgers, and fries at Five Guys. Reading all of this, I was anxious to make my own review.
Ordering is easy at Five Guys. The menu only consists of burgers and fries although they do have a veggie burger and grilled cheese as well. The real choices at Five Guys are which toppings to choose from. All toppings are available at no extra charge and the choices are awesome. You can have all the usual stuff like lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, mayo, ketchup, and mustard. But at Five Guys you can also get barbeque sauce, A-1, grilled onions, jalepeno peppers, and mushrooms.
I was ready to order a burger and fries. Sadly, this location of Five Guys was having trouble with a broken French Fryer today and were unable to make French Fries! I visited at noon on a Saturday so this should have been a catastrophe for the manager but they seemed to be totally unaffected by the lack of fries at a place that only serves burgers and fries. There were still plenty of diners waiting for their orders and enjoying their lunches so I proceeded to order up just a burger and a drink.
At Five Guys peanuts in the shell are free so you can eat all you want. With the lack of fries I figured peanuts would have to suffice as a side dish. However, had I been the manager of this restaurant, I would have made every effort to buy, borrow and beg a deep fryer from somewhere If all efforts failed I would have at least gone out and bought some potato chips to serve with the burgers and offered them for free as compensation to customers for their patience over the lack of French Fries. But that’s just me.
After filling my soda cup I munched on some peanuts and waited for my burger. About five minutes later my number was called. Though I was eating in the restaurant, the burger was bagged and wrapped like I was taking it to go. There are apparently no trays at Five Guys.
The burger was big and I was quite surprised to find it was actually a double! Apparently for $5.99 for a cheeseburger at Five Guys you get what would be a double cheeseburger from most restaurants. The toppings were piled high and all were excellent. There were two slices of deli style American cheese on top of the burgers. The sesame seed bun was fresh and tasty, the burger was hot and delicious, and it was big, juicy and satisfying.
I’d been sure that the lack of fries would taint my experience at Five Guys but instead it allowed me to sample the burgers and judge them individually on their own merit. I found that a burger at Five Guys is really all you need! I couldn’t have eaten many fries anyway. The cheeseburger I got at Five Guys was one of the best I’ve ever eaten.
The only down side of Five Guys other than the lack of Fries, which I suspect is a rare occurrence, were the prices. At $5.99 for a burger and $1.99 for a soda Five Guys is priced much higher than other fast food. Had I been able to order fries as well, my lunch would have been more than $10.00. In the $10.00 range there are certainly many other choices in the area for dining including full service restaurants and adult beverages. I will definitely be returning to Five Guys when I’m craving a really good burger. I will also only return on a day when I’ve eaten light as the burger I ordered contained well over 800 calories. I really want to try the French Fries. If the burgers are the best I’ve ever eaten surely the fries are great as well. My overall score for Five Guys burgers is an outstanding A+. Unfortunately, I am unable to rate the fries.
