Having children causes numerous changes within your life; socially, professionally, emotionally, and especially financially. The changes that have to be made after a child is born may seem very taunting and trying to a first time parent, but in the end, rest assured, it is all worth it. There is absolutely nothing as great as when a child looks up at you with unconditional love in their eyes. There are a few basic changes that new parents should be aware of, and if prepared for them, you will be able to enjoy your new level of parenting by making some simple self help changes.
One of the biggest changes that you will have to make deals with your social life, and the freedom that you may be used to. You will no longer have the freedom that you may have once enjoyed. Instead of dropping everything and going out on the town with your friends, you stay home with your child and interact with them. Most people find that this is not that big of a sacrifice, but others may find this the most trying change.
The second change that you have to expect is losing your privacy. A child wants to be by your side, whether you are trying to sleep or taking care of personal hygiene issues. Going to the bathroom and taking a shower in privacy is no longer feasible unless your spouse is available to give you a break. Even then, though, the child will want to wander around and try to find out where you are at and what you are doing.
The third change is having to work your employment schedule around the child. If your son has a soccer meet than you should take time off and make sure that you go and cheer for him. If your daughter has swimming lessons and wants your support, you need to go. Most employers are well aware of this fact and are willing to accommodate your needs as a parent and allow you to have time off, or leave early on occasions.
The last two changes that will be made within your life deal with how you feel emotionally and physically. Being tired for the first few years is almost a given, no matter how well behaved the new baby is. Children rely on you, as the parent, to care for them, no matter what time of day or night it is. Emotionally you will have to be more caring, loving, and understanding than you may be used to. Children learn from their parents, so in order to mold them into successful adults you have to change your emotional and behavioral patterns.
Becoming a parent may seem like a life changing moment, and for most people it is. For better or worse, depending upon how you view the situation, a child being born is a life changing moment, both emotionally physically.
