One of the number one things most people buy around Halloween is a pumpkin. When buying pumpkins, make sure they are a dark orange, fragrant free, and no bruises on the skin. After you buy a pumpkin, you might ask yourself, “Is there anything new I can do with this pumpkin?’ Yes, there is. Here are five things you can do with a pumpkin for Halloween.
Pop Pumpkin Seeds for Pumpkin Popcorn
First scrape the pumpkin seeds out of the pumpkin. Wash with water and rinse with warm ginger ale. Heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil and 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a steel pot, and pour 2/3 cup of the pumpkin seeds. Cover and let pop. Pour in a bowl and top with walnuts and 2 tablespoons of melted butter mixed with a 1/2 teaspoon of brown sugar.
Make Pumpkin Orange Juice
Scrape the pumpkin seeds out of the pumpkin and rinse the inside of the pumpkin with water. Cut off the orange rind outside of the pumpkin and cut up the white part of the pumpkin. Chop the white part of the pumpkin put 1/4 cup in a blender with 1/2 cup of pulp orange juice. Freeze part of it and serve the rest with cinnamon raisin bread or bagels with roasted vegetable cream cheese.
Make a Halloween Pumpkin Ginger Haunted House
Cut off the outside of the pumpkin, so the inside of the pumpkin is left. Cut up the white part of the pumpkin in squares and boil in warm milk until tender and mash. Find your favorite Ginger cake recipe and add mashed pumpkin to it and bake. Cut in a 9×9, 6×7, 5×5, 5×5, and 3×7 inch house and adhere together with white frosting and decorate as desired.
Make Pumpkin Candles
Instead of putting candles inside of the pumpkin you can use the pumpkin to make the candles. Cut off the outside of the pumpkin and cut the white part of the pumpkin into square. Boil in water until tender and then for every 1/2 cup of pumpkin add 2/3 cup of a wax starter or melted wax(you can use other candles). Put in a mold, lay a flay(the string to light the candle) and wait until it sets.
Fill With Pastries or Small Pies
Cut the top of the pumpkin off, scrape out the pumpkin seeds and clean with warm water and ginger ale. Dry off with a paper towel and drape a brown cloth over the pumpkin. Set a small pie or cake stand inside the pumpkin and top with double crusted small strawberry, peach, and apple pastries and pies and fill to overflowing.
