A car windshield can chip and crack for various reasons, like a truck in front of you shot a pea-gravel, a tree branch fell on it, your kid missed the ball, etc. Unfortunately, even a small crack tends to propagate even further. Something that was barely visible becomes irritatingly apparent. So what can you do to fix it? Should you just go and find a replacement for your windshield? That is a costly solution. An easier and cheaper solution is to use a windshield repair kit like the Fix-A-Flat Do-It-Yourself Windshield Repair Kit.
The manufacturer claims that this product will only work for chips and not cracks. However in reality it is able to fix or at least greatly reduce the visibility of cracks. And it’s not for just windshield it also works for fixing chip in headlights.
The kit comes with an instruction sheet, 1 gram bottle of repair resin, curing strips, repair device and sleeve razor blade. One gram of repair resin may not sound much but it is actually plenty enough to do multiple repairs. Unlike other windshield repair kit the resin in this kit will remain transparent when dry instead of turning hazy or white. It’s really great because it helps in making the chip or crack less visible.
So how do you use it?
First get your car to a shaded location and clean the repair area until no dust is left in there. Secure the repair device using the included suction cups and make sure the repair area is right in the middle. Next apply the resin and then insert the pressure tube. Wait for about then minutes to give time for the pressure to push the resin into fill the crack. Now apply a little resin on the center of the repair area and put the plastic strip on it. You can now move your car into direct sunlight to make it dry faster. Once the resin is completely dry remove the plastic strip and use the razor blade to scrap any resin residue.
If the explanation above is still not clear enough for you don’t worry. Just read the included instruction manual. It’s easy to understand even for people who never use this kind of windshield repair kit before.
