Black Friday (the infamous day after Thanksgiving) is well-known as the biggest shopping day of the year, with stores far and wide pulling out all the stops to draw in the shoppers and pad slumping sales from the previous ten months of the year. The downside to this shopping extravaganza is that you have to brave a multitude of fierce and committed shoppers just to get that one special gift on your list at a fantastic price. That’s when the Flint City Handmade Holiday Craft Market swoops in to offer an alternative.
Flint City Handmade, Flint Michigan’s local Crafting Collective, has been giving shoppers a city-friendly and traffic friendly alternative to the Big Box stores with their annual Flint City Handmade Holiday Craft Market 2010. Set on the Saturday after Thanksgiving (instead of Black Friday), the Holiday Craft Market collects a variety of local crafters together in the downtown area to peddle their wears and offer one-of-a-kind handmade gifts to folks who are looking for something new and exciting to pass out during their gift-giving festivities.
This year’s annual Craft Market will be held on November 27, 2010 and will feature free admission, as well as amazing goodie bags to the first twenty-five shoppers to arrive at the market. Shopping begins at 10:00AM and lasts until 6:00PM. More than fifty different vendors from the area have signed up to sell their wares at the Rowe Professional Building on South Saginaw Street.
Previous craft markets hosted by Flint City Handmade have included jewelery-makers, leather workers, crafters of children’s toys, and fine art vendors, All of the artists are native to Michigan with most of them hailing from Flint and its surrounding suburbs. In addition to the Holiday Craft Market, the local group also hosts a Spring Craft Market as well as monthly crafting workshops in the downtown area, giving local people a chance to meet up and enjoy their hobbies.
If you happen to get hungry while participating in the shopping festivities, The Lunch Studio will be open to provide drinks and sandwiches for purchase by ravenous gift-hunters. For those who are unable to attend, many of the local vendors will have items available on Etsy with links to local vendors’ pages provided on the Flint City Handmade Facebook Page.
Avoid the traffic at the mall and support local artists by doing some of your holiday shopping at the Holiday Craft Market. With free admission, how could you lose? You might find that perfect gift you’ve been looking for and you’ll be spending your hard-earned money locally, rather than passing it on to the big corporations.
