One of Southern California’s oldest restaurants “Follow Your Heart” in Canoga Park has been opened since 1970. It is one of the best loved restaurants in Southern California. You will find it tucked behind the market of its namesake.
Some people have referred to “Follow Your Heart” as a trip back to the 1970s. This is due to the community feeling that they are famous for. They feature a very comfortable and cozy environment. When you walk in you get the same feeling you get when you walk into your grandmother’s house. “The counter” is a real experience. Many friendships have been formed at “the counter”. Many of the same people can be seen at “the counter” on a daily basis.
What makes “Follow Your Heart” so special? Besides the atmosphere, the food is very moderately priced. The food is home-style (just like grandma made) and the portions are very generous. The menu is mainly lacto-vegetarian. Lacto-vegetarian means that there are some dairy products used but they use no meat, poultry, fish or eggs. They have some vegan items available. These items will contain no meat or dairy.
Most food is made with organic ingredients. Organic ingredients are solely used on selected items. When you order your meal you will receive a special. They are known for their hearty soups which you will receive a bowl with your meal. There a dairy, non-dairy, and low-fat, low sodium options each day.
What to eat? For breakfast try the “Breakfast Burrito”. It is an oversized wheat tortilla filled with scrambled tofu, black beans and vegetarian chorizo. It is served with Spanish rice, guacamole and sour cream.
For lunch, order the “Mediterranean Plate”. It consists of fresh hummus made of ground garbanzo beans, sesame tahini, olive oil, garlic, onion, lemon juice, and cayenne. It is served with tabbouleh, falafel, cucumber, tomato, cabbage, and warm pita bread.
For dinner have the “Organic Tempeh Tacos”. They are always a treat. Two organic, stone ground tortilla shells are filled with seasoned grilled organic tempeh, cheddar and jack cheese, tomatoes, and fresh cilantro. It is served with Spanish rice, black beans, guacamole, sour cream and a lime wedge.
To drink they offer fresh juices, shakes (non-dairy), smoothies, ice blended mochas, and root beer floats.
After your meal you can get some shopping done at the “Follow Your Heart” market. Talk about killing two birds with one stone (no pun intended).
