For Colored Girls, Film Review
What in the hell is going on with this picture? If you have ever felt the heart beat of your mother, sister or girlfriend, you have never felt her heartbeat when, or after the storm hits her life. This is the case in this movie. These women portrayal of the national and international level of a woman’s cross is phenomenal that we as women have the courage to rebound, get up and find sisterhood. It is evident that within these walls of confusion, despair and hell fire, the case that involves our lives in the systems of oppression brings us to this very notion of “legacy struggle,” (Collins, the epistemology of black women) Now some will argue that is can’t be all that bad. It is not within the tears of a woman of color that make you go what in the world is she talking about, is she complaining, and trying to make her story up as she goes along. It sounds absolutely insane to endure such challenges that face a woman of color. This is this movie, the taste, minute, second and moment of all women stories that are ignored, swept under the carpet and hidden to never be spoken of, as the biblical times would commit, “she should not speak,” well here she is speaking in this movie of her struggle, pain, and triumph of survival to pick up her dead body and walk.
What else can I say but a theatrical performances by all of my favorite actresses “trying to not lose their mind” because believe me the incident calls for such mental stagnation. It is not that these women are playing characters or roles, but symbols of the ever ending stories of women, who struggled in their daily lives to raise men, love men, comfort men and finally lose their mind to save their babies. It is not a complicated subject for those who are not in need to understand. Actually it is nonsense and absolutely ridiculous for those who cannot comprehend the journey of the color girl and woman.
For those who will not see it because you do not want your breakfast, lunch and dinner on the floor in the movie theater I will tell you the most crucial and climax of the movie, when Elis, had to be a mother, and watch her children be dropped from her apartment window was absolutely heart wrenching. Bravo for her actress role to portray a woman’s love for her children’s blood, the dead and how she wept for their blood to be kept whole. Almost a Cain and Abel story, but to watch the children’s father lose his mind, and after the war, convince himself that his illness was more important than his children was one of the biggest issues of the Color of America. The soldiers coming home without benefits because their Veteran Bills and Credits did not cover mental illness now that make you start squirming in your seats huh? Yes, it is by far, the most heart wrenching, mind boggling movie of this year, a classic for the survivors of sexual violence, rape and just let me say it, can I be real with you? A colored girl legacy of struggle if you never felt understood this is the movie to go see because when you leave watching this you will never doubt again that you are loved, valued, and keep on keeping on. It was not only cleansing, completely holistic this movie was one of those movies that you said, how much you hate tragedies, but this is an exception to the rule.
Sisters and allies, if you never understood in your lifetime and the generations before could never explain to you the lamentation of a black woman, color woman, and all the bells and whistles that go into the elements and essence of a colored girl struggle, when she shows up, believe this she is coming into work, school and in your life with this behind her, carry your cross girlfriends, and watch this movie to carry it with honor, dignity and purpose. Until, the systems of oppression become extinct, and the value of women become equal to all identities of all constructions of gender let us start with this, listen to her speak. Excellent job the Cast of For Color Girls!!! A+
