Matt Forte has been named the NFC Offensive Player of the Week. He garnered his great statistics in the Bears’ win over the hapless Detroit Lions.
Larry Mayer has posted an article on the Chicago Bears’ website titled “Forte named offensive of week for first time.” This is Forte’s third year in the National Football League out of Tulane University. Last year, he was not healthy.
I can remember how impressed the Bears were with Forte because he showed up for his initial interviews wearing a coat and tie. He is a class act, although, as much of a Bears fan as I am, I still am most impressed by the class of Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald.
Forte’s Sunday accomplishments included gaining 201 yards from scrimmage on receptions of 89 and 28 yards. The 89-yard catch set a record for a running back in Bears history, and longest play by an NFL running back since 2001. Further, it tied the longest play from scrimmage at Soldier Field; it was quite a play!
Forte’s 201 yards from scrimmage comprised 50 rushing yards and 151 yards receiving.
There were a number of other records tied or broken, including the first time a running back had two touchdown receptions since Neal Anderson did it against the Green Bay Packers in 1989. It has been awhile.
Finally, Forte is the first Bears player to be named the NFC Offensive Player of the Week since Jay Cutler did it Week 16 of last season.
Speaking of Cutler, he has been nominated to be FedEx Air Player of the Week. He completed 23 of 35 passes for 372 yards. He had two touchdowns and one interception with a passer rating of 108.3. He was second only to the Colts’ Peyton Manning ,who had 433 yards in a loss to Houston. Cutler scrambled for an additional 22 yards.
While the Bears won the game, it really was very sloppily played. Still, there were a couple of nice performances turned in by Matt Forte and Jay Cutler.
I don’t hold out much hope that there will be similar performances against the Dallas Cowboys this coming week.
