Fortuna Buffett is one of the better eateries in Oakland Chinatown. The selection to price selection is great, a wonderful value. It is located at 800 Broadway in Oakland, on the western edge of Chinatown, opposite Starbucks and easily accessible by BART. Fortuna Buffet took over from another restaurant Jade Villa.
Price. The lady at the counter collects your money first, and then you are seated. Everything is in one price. There is nothing else to buy. For lunch, the costs is a mere $9.25+tax, and only $8.25+tax for senior citizens (over age 62). It is $15.50 for dinner on weekdays and $17.75 for dinner on weekends. The price for dinner for seniors is $13.99 during the week and $16.25 during weekends.
Selection. The price includes appetizer, main course, dessert, and drinks. The greatest thing about going to a buffett is that you don’t have to choose from a menu. The fruit, seafood and sushi are at one end. The hot and fried foods are at the other end. In between, there is a lot of Chinese food and dim sum. The quality of the fruit and seafood is generally good. The sushi is a bit on the dry side. The Chinese food and dim sum varies, but generally for a buffett, not bad. As with most buffetts on this genere, foods that are fried are done better than the dim sum. Some dim sum that have a lot of sauce like chicken feet, pig’s feet, that have a lot of sauce is do pretty well. Shu mai is not done so well. Fried and BBQ foods are at the far end. The salt and pepper spare ribs is pretty good. Desert is on the west of the restaurant. The almond jello is pretty good, and there are many other sweet delicacies as well. Drinks are on the eastern side.
The service from the staff is generally good. They will remove your plates quickly when you get up off your seat for round 2. Finally, the bathroom is relatively clean, but not that well lit. It is much better than many Chinese restaurants that I have been to. Overall, Fortuna is a great value, especially for lunch. Parking is available by meters on the street, in lots, or you can take BART or A/C Transit. It is close to Jack London Square. On a nice day, you can walk off you meal. There is another location in San Leandro.
