School sports teams and clubs can show team spirit, have fun, and get some laughs with these group costume ideas. Planning and putting together a group Halloween costume is a great way for a team to bond and makes a fun group activity. Here are four group costume ideas that can be worn to school, a party, or maybe even to practice.
Graduating Class: Each member can purchase or sew an inexpensive graduation cap and gown. It would be fun to choose school colors – or get a laugh and dress in an opposing school’s colors. You can also choose to dress in a popular university’s colors. To make an easy graduate cap, use strong scissors to cut off the bill of an old baseball cap. Cover a square of thick cardboard with matching fabric using a hot glue gun. Then carefully poke a tassel through the middle and fasten with a knot underneath. Attach the completed square to the baseball cap with strong tape. Whenever you walk across the room, move your tassel to the other side, and remember to carry a fake, rolled up diploma.
Bee Hive: If bee costumes are too pricey, make one yourself by adding black fabric stripes to a yellow shirt, or yellow stripes to a black shirt with fabric glue or a sewing machine. Pair that with black pants and fake wings, which can be purchased anywhere costumes are sold. You can also make a pair of wings with cut out cardboard and attaching them to suspenders or a backpack. Next, paint a foam craft cone with black paint and attach it with a ribbon or belt as your bee stinger. To complete the hive, one lucky member – preferably the captain – can wear a crown and be the Queen Bee.
Deck of Cards: You don’t need a full deck to play this game! Have each member make their own board sign – two large pieces of rectangle shaped cardboard connected by shoulder straps. It might be a good idea to cut up a belt or use canvas straps for shoulder straps if regular rope cuts into your shoulders or strips of fabric won’t support the boards. Paint the front and back of the boards to look like giant playing cards. If the coach wants to get involved too, then they get to be the Joker! For a version of this costume that is easier to wear while at your desk or on the practice field, try decorating oversized white t-shirts with fabric paint to look like cards.
Spooky Movie: Have each member come dressed as a traditional spooky Halloween character. Examples are: Dracula, mummy, werewolf, Frankenstein or Bride of Frankenstein, goblins, ghosts, etc. The funny part that would tie all the costumes together is the captain or coach would dress up as Van Helsing! They will need a brown leather hat with a wide brim and brown slacks tucked into black or brown boots. For the top, wear a brown turtle neck sweater; black leather or faux -leather vest with silver clasps; and a long brown leather jacket or trench coat. For added features, use brown face paint and a sponge to create an unshaven look. Carry a fake cross bow and large fake knife. The Van Helsing costume and weapon props can actually be purchased at a costume store… if you want to take the easy route! Otherwise, shop for the clothing items you don’t already have at a local thrift store. You can hot glue silver clasps to the vest to look like the real thing. Just remember not to carry your fake weapons to school!
