Distance learning is becoming a very popular platform for high school and college students to receive their diploma and degree. Distance learning is education that takes place over the internet instead of in the traditional classroom setting. This type of education has many benefits but a few cons can be found. Distance education may not be for everyone. Four cons of distance learning are listed below.
1. There is a lack of social interaction with distance learning. Distance education takes place online. Students might get a chance to interact with one another through weekly discussion boards but that is not always the case. In many cases, students only interact with the professor. Homework assignments, quizzes, and tests are usually submitted online. In some instances math tests and finals will have to be taken in school or will have to be proctored but students cannot interact with another during this time. Distance learning students will not get the chance to mingle on campus like those students who go into school. This can put a hamper on the students’ social lives. Some students might not flourish as well in a setting where they are not able to interact with other students and hear their ideas and thoughts on the weekly subjects.
2. The professor’s response might not be immediate. The online professor most likely teaches multiple classes in school or online and for that reason their schedules may not be as open for communication. Their response time will usually not be immediate and students may have to wait up until 24 hours to get a response back. This could create obstacles for students who are struggling with their school wok that is due later on in the day. Students waiting on a response from their teacher may have to postpone finishing their work until the teacher responds to them which can affect their grade.
3. Students may have to figure out assignments on their own. Professors might not be available to respond to student’s inquiries in a timely fashion and for that reason many students are left figuring out answers to questions on their own. This can be particularly frustrating when students have deadlines to make.
4. Students will need a reliable computer with current software. It is important for students to have access to a reliable computer with up to date software and internet. Students will be given a print out of the type of software they will need on their computer for their courses. Computers need to be in working condition meaning one that freezes often and is very slow will not be adequate for an online course. This can present a problem to those individuals who do not have the funds to purchase a computer or to pay for internet service.
