For the past few years I have been counting calories and watching my diet, and have lost 22 pounds. Coming up with lunches that are satisfying can be challenging. The plain old sandwich gets boring, so I like to mix it up and make my own deli-style submarine sandwich.
One of the best breads for making such a meal is Francisco International Outdoor Gourmet Rolls. These are made by Bimbo Bakeries USA, Inc. in Fort Worth Texas. The 16 ounce bag contains six rolls, which look like an over sized hot dog bun.
The back of the bag has a recipe for a “Buffalo Chicken Tenders Sandwich”, which sound delicious. I haven’t tried them, but I do make deli style sandwiches using low fat mayonnaise, ham or turkey slices, tomatoes, onions, and lettuce. I learned a trick years ago from a sub shop in upstate New York, and I sprinkle a little bit of oregano over my sandwich, which gives it an awesome flavor.
The Francisco rolls are thick and contain a good deal of bread – I sometimes pull some of the bread out from the inside of the roll, and I still get the same great taste with fewer calories. I love submarine sandwiches, but I don’t like the fat, calories or the price. These Francisco rolls taste very similar to the breads that are used in sub shops.
Each roll, or bun, contains 210 calories, 2 grams of fat, 0 grams of both saturated and trans fat, 0 mg cholesterol, 430 mg of sodium, 38 grams of carbohydrates, 2 grams of dietary fiber, 2 grams of sugars, and 8 grams of protein. They also give the body 10% riboflavin, 8% calcium, 15% iron, 15% folate, and 15% nicain.
Making a sandwich out of Francisco International Outdoor Gourmet Rolls makes a meal special. It is so much more than a sandwich! These are very versatile, and you can make many different kinds of sandwiches from these rolls. We have also made French Dip sandwiches with these rolls, adding thin sliced roast beef, melting cheese over the top, and dipping the sandwich in Au Jus dipping sauce. If you don’t have any Au Jus, you can make up some beef bouillon and use that instead.
Another choice is to make chicken or tuna salad and layering it on the rolls before topping them with fresh Romaine lettuce. The possibilities are endless, use your imagination. If you are tired of the plain old sandwich, give Francisco International Outdoor Gourmet Rolls a try!
