I like watching soccer at Franklin Playground. The games appear to be friendly, but competitive. The men are between the ages of 18-40+, all playing together. There are a lot of serious faces. Spanish is the language of choice here.
Franklin Playground is very good, well-maintained soccer field. There are night lights for safety as the sun settles. Many locals seem to be enjoying being a part of the community, in addition to the exercise. This is a great thing to see.
There is a small homeless population at Franklin Playground milling around, but most of the men very kind and respectful. There is a small playground for children on the premises as well, and an advertisement for the local community to come out and help clean up once a month.
There are some steep steps leading up to the soccer field on the Bryant Street side. I spend more of my time at Jackson Recreation Center because I understand baseball better, but its nice to spend some time up at Franklin Playground as well. Before and after the games, you can run a lot of errands at Potrero Center, and along Bryant Street, there is Starbucks and other establishments. Parking is plentiful, and it is very well served by the 22, 9, 27 MUNI buses. This field seems to be used quite often. Call (415) 554 9527 if you want to make reservations, or help with cleaning up.
