The year was 1992 when Las Vegas was treated to their first free standing hunted house which had never before been done, all thanks to Freakling Bro’s Horror Show. Their first hunted house opened on the corner of Sahara and Decatur BLVD.
In 1995 just three years later Freakling Bro’s Horror Show did something that had not been done before a self contained mobile attraction by using by using trailers. This paved the way for a new concept in the hunted house industry.
By 2000 Freakling Bro’s Horror Show opened the Halloween session with two new houses, giving three individual and extraordinary frightful experiences.
One thing you will not find with Freakling Bro’s Horror Shows the scenes from horror movies such as Friday the 13th. Not a lot of fake blood or chain saws at the back door. Yet their hunted houses are some of the scariest and unique that I have ever been in.
I was honored when Shadow Lord of The Mortuary agreed to stop by and visit a bit with me before he starts working on this year’s show.
Me: How did you start working with Freakling Bros Mortuary?
Shadow Lord of the Mortuary: In 2001 I was asked by a friend to call and set up a interview. I did and I also told my friend to be himself and he would get hired. I have had several years’ experiences already doing the Halloween thing for years. I let them hear my roar I was hired to work at the Mortuary in one scare that didn’t work to well the year before. I took it to a new level with the timing and sounds I can make adding to the scare. I told my boss Dukula during that year that I felt at home with his company and would be standing out front as a manager soon. I was asked to move to asst. manager/Tech. under Dukula at the Dungeon in 2003 and in 2004 I was a manager trainee at the Mortuary under the Demon spawn JT. I learned so much in the 2 yrs and added to the year’s experience I had already I was able to enhance an already scary haunted house.
Me: How many years have you been involved with Freakling Bros Mortuary?
Shadow Lord of the Mortuary: This is my 10th year with the company. As for the Mortuary itself since Freakling Brothers has 3 haunted attractions.( Castle Vampyre, Circus of Horrors and the Mortuary ) One year as a actor, One yr as a Asst. Manager/Tech , Manager since 2005. I am truly the Lord of the Mortuary
Me: Do you work on it year round? Or do you just spend a few months before Halloween working on it?
Shadow Lord of the Mortuary: I wish there was a haunted house that was run year round. I would so want to be a major part of it. For now it’s just a couple of months a year, but I help out during the year to make sure they are all up and running for the season.
Me: What is your favorite part of working on the hunted house?
Shadow Lord of the Mortuary: I would have to say my favorite part of being part of the haunted house is the screams we can get from people of all ages. I was a clown for off and on 20 + years making kids laugh and now I can make the whole family scream and cry. HAHAHAHAHA I like to be a balanced guy
Me: It seems like you really get into this personally care to share what is about hunted houses that is a turn on for you?
Shadow Lord of the Mortuary: Well when I was a kid you never heard the term Goth. I was called Macabre. I have always been attracted to the dark side of things. Not evil just dark. I grew up watching the Addams Family, Munster’s and even Bewitched. My favorite car has always been a Cadillac hearse and I own a 1974 black one with a metal casket. I just seem to fit the Mortuary perfectly, not that I couldn’t fit in any of the other house as easy. I was born to do this. I did haunted tours as well. Real ghost stories of Las Vegas
Me: Does it change a lot from year to year?
Shadow Lord of the Mortuary: I like to do a lil changes each year to keep even our fans on edge at times.
Me: Do you have a makeup artist that works with Freakling Bros or does everyone do their own makeup?
Shadow Lord of the Mortuary: We have someone who does Make up for all the shows but each manager is also so into Halloween so that we know what to do and how to train the actors to do it correctly.
Me: Who comes up with ideas for the costumes?
Shadow Lord of the Mortuary: That would be Dukula and the Demonspawn himself JT. I have added to my house and changed a couple of costumes and scares with permission
Me: Is there any special moments from past hunted houses you would like to share with us?
Shadow Lord of the Mortuary: My 2nd year as a manager, my best friend for 25 yrs joined me as my asst. manager/tech and the Demonic Duo was unearthed. Another time I was so close to firing an actor for being too nice to people. I told him he had to really scare the next group or he is fired right after they past. He was so scary that everyone was on the floor and so afraid to pass him. I told him to keep that up and he has worked for me for years now. I also add my own scare to the house and was so proud it has worked out.
Me: Care to share some of what we here in Vegas can expect this year’s Mortuary?
Shadow Lord of the Mortuary: All 3 houses in Freakling Bro’s, Castle Vampyre, Circus of Horrors and the Mortuary are 3 of the scariest house I have been part of and each has a equal following. Each house has scares you won’t find in any other house
Me: If anyone is interested in working for Freakling Bros Mortuary who should they contact and what would they need to bring with them?
Shadow Lord of the Mortuary: Check out Freakling Bro’s on face- book and my- space and we do try to advertise on Craigslist if the completion doesn’t red flag us again. We hire for all 3 haunted houses all shapes and sizes just be yourself.
Me: Is there a place on line where people can go to get tickets online?
Shadow Lord of the Mortuary: I am not sure about that check out Freakling bro’s dot com
I cannot wait to for their show to open this year, I am sure just like in years past I will need to make sure my own heart is beating still when I live the hunted house. For more information you can call 702-362-FEAR or visit their web page at www.freaklinghaut.com
