Who says you can’t find great bargains in Los Angeles dining.
By chance we were invited to newly opened beer pub / brewhouse Melgard for a late Friday afternoon beer and business meeting. When invited, two things stuck in my mind. First was that it was in the old Louise’s Trattoria space, an old friend any Melrose shopper has visited numerous times during its tenure there. The second thing my friend mentioned was they had free pizza with each beer during happy hour. I was instantly sold!
There’s a new place to drink, hang out and watch sports and its called Melgard. The name gives away the location, MELrose and GARDner. Smack in the middle of trendy Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles, in the old Louise’s Trattoria space, right next to Johhny Rockets. Theres a large bar, big inside space and a huge outdoor patio, which is really where you need to be. The patio is roomy, with big tables with umbrellas. You’re also almost on the corner of the sidewalk, so you have a view of the parade of humanity always happening on Melrose Ave.
Perhaps in a statement about the economy, we met there on a Friday night @ 5 PM, and it was quite empty, as was most of Melrose. I would think the place will soon be packed and is quite full on the weekends, as Melrose itself is usually packed. Also we met at 5 PM, which is probably before the big after-work crowd arrives.
Taking over the Louise’s space, its a basic bar with a huge patio. Its also dog friendly, with the staff always quick to bring a doggy bowl for your canine companion (filled with water not beer). The great thing about Melgard happens during their 5-7 PM happy hour every day. You get a free pizza with each beer. Whether you get a Corona or a fancy imported Ale. The pizzas are quite big, about 10″ and taste great. And they keep them coming. Within minutes, we had 3 beers and 3 pizzas, which was so, so nice on a Friday afternoon. The beer selection is huge, and the bartender and waiter we had were German, so they knew their beer. The selection was vast, but not overwhleming, with a range of prices. They also serve a full menu, but on this trip we stuck with beer and pizza. I had several Hoegardens, which were wonderful.
The people watching is unmatched anywhere. We stayed for an hour just as big screen TVs were being wheeled out, so this is definitely a great place to catch a game.
Its kind of trendy, so Melgard doesn’t have a website, drop in and check it out.
