One of my favorite lesson plans for fall assign students to make a leaf identification booklet. Here are free printable leaf and tree identification charts, cards and games to help you plan your nature science study. Assign students collect leaves, press them or make leaf rubbings. Students must label leaves and to do so they will need leaf and tree identification charts and diagrams. I’ve included links in this article for free printable and online leaf and tree identification activities.

Forestry.about.com (click here) also has 54 coloring pages taken from naturalist Charles Sprague Sargent’s leaf plate illustrations. Each page features a different leaf with it’s corresponding tree, berry, nut and foliage. These printable illustrations include cut-away drawings and other helpful identification data, plus the Latin classification genus and species of the tree. The website gives the leaf and tree names in their American variation.
