Your family just had ham, potatoes, and green peas earlier this week. You want to use the leftover ham, but you don’t want a repeat performance of the same dinner. Set the ham aside to use for tomorrow’s meal, and make these delicious spiced fresh pears tonight. They’ll have all night and half the day to saturate themselves with honey, cinnamon, and cloves, and make an excellent companion to the sliced ham. Add a macaroni salad and you have a different menu selection for the family.
Fresh Spiced Pears
4 pears, peeled, cored and quartered
1 1/2 cups honey
1/2 cup vinegar
3 three-inch cinnamon sticks
3 whole cloves
1/2 tsp allspice
Place all ingredients, except pears, into a saucepan. Heat until boiling. Reduce heat to simmer; add pears. Stir occasionally, and let simmer for 1 hour. Remove from heat, cover, and let cool. Put the mixture into a glass jar, and refrigerate for at least 8 hours.
Next day, before serving
Pour the mixture into a clear glass or crystal dish. If you like, spread 15 – 20 clean, stemmed, seedless grapes around the edge of the dish. I have seen other people add orange slices as a garnish.
Cooking is fun: We get to be creative. It’s like music. If you write it, you’re never wrong, no matter what you do. Enjoy yourself, and have a good time making a special dish like this look pretty.
