For decades, 3D technologies have wowed audiences of all ages. From early horror films, to the latest animated theatrical releases, 3D adds an experience to visual media like no other. As consumer targeted products have taken on characteristics of professional grade equipment, and continue to mature rapidly in the modern digital age, it is only natural that technologies such as 3D make it into the home. For example, LED based 3D capable HD televisions from manufacturers such as LG, Samsung, and Sony, have continued to grow in popularity. Now, for those wishing to record their own 3D films, Fujifilm offers a 3D camera capable of capturing both 3D stills and 3D HD movies.
Consumer based 3D home technologies obviously aren’t new. Over the years various products such as the View-Master, the Kodak stereo camera, software packages, and even coloring books that include a variation of 3D have been common household items. In the modern hi-tech world of HD imagery, however, off-the-shelf 3D creation devices haven’t been as mainstream. Cameras that are capable of 3D capture include the FinePix REAL 3D series of cameras. Currently available camera models are the W1 and W3. The W3 is the first camera to offer 3D HD capture capabilities, and while the W3 is an upgraded model of the W1, many of the core features for both cameras remain the same.
Brief system specs for both models include:
Number of effective pixels: 10.0 megapixels
Internal memory (34MB W3)(42MB W1)
Memory card support: SD memory card, SDHC memory card
3D Still image: MPO+JPEG, MPO (Multi Picture Format compatible)
2D Still image: JPEG (Exif Ver 2.3)
3D Movie: 3D-AVI (Stereo AVI format with 2 image channels)
2D Movie: AVI format (Motion JPEG with stereo sound)
Differences between the cameras are based on changes to the W3. The W3 features the addition of the 16:9 image aspect ratio, a maximum video resolution of 1280 x 720 (from 640 x 480), an increased lcd view screen display size (3.5 vs 2.8), and an HDMI video interface. Complete camera specifications for both models are available at the Fujifilm FinePix REAL 3D website. Suggested retail price for the W3 is $599.
Also available from Fujifilm, is a 3D digital viewer that does not require any special glasses, the FinePix REAL 3D V1. This 8″ viewing device has a resolution of 800 x 600, is capable of 3D viewing at 400 x 600 pixels, features a touch bar for operation, and supports wireless connectivity
