Using balloons in your Sunday School games is a great and inexpensive way to infuse fun into your class. Here’s a Memory Verse game called, Memory Verse Balloon Scramble, that your kids will ask to play again and again.
You’ll need to purchase a bag of balloons for this game. Twenty to twenty-four balloons should be enough, but it may be cheaper to buy a larger bag of balloons and save the extras for another game.
With a marker, write each word of your memory verse onto one balloon. If your memory verse is particularly long, you may want to have two to three words per balloon instead. You’ll need two have two complete sets of balloons – one for each team. If you have a large Sunday School class then you’ll probably want to have more than two teams, so make enough sets of balloons so that each team will have one. When you’re done, place the balloons into two separate garbage bags and place them at the front of the room.
When game time comes, divide your Sunday School class into two teams and tell them that you’re going to be playing a game called Memory Verse Balloon Scramble. Have each team member grab a balloon from the garbage bag and form a line.
Designate one person per team to be the “Unscrambler”. When you say, “Go!” this person’s job will be to unscramble the memory verse into the correct order. Their teammates (those holding onto the balloons) cannot offer any help. They can only move wherever and whenever the “Unscrambler” directs them to move.
Once the “Unscrambler” thinks they have the memory verse in the correct order, he or she must raise their hand and have you come over to verify that the memory verse is correct. Have them tap each teammate on the shoulder when it is their turn to say the word or words written on their balloon. If the order is correct, the team scores one point. If the order is incorrect, they score zero points.
Repeat this game a few times, each time choosing a different person to play the role of the “Unscrambler”. The winner of the Memory Verse Balloon Scramble will be the team that scores the most points by the end. Have a small prize ready for the winning team.
When the game is over, have the kids put the balloons back into the garbage bags and save them for another game or just let your kids take them home as a little bonus.
