The Fantastic Fest is a film festival that is held in Austin Texas during the month of September. This year’s version has already come and but there were many new aspects of this festival that are worthy of mention. For those who were looking for fun things to do in between movies, there was one affordable option that was available through the festival and without having to even leave the venue.
Fantastic Arcade – One of the hottest institutions this year is the Fantastic Arcade. When there are no films to watch, movie goers had the option to head to the arcade and play video games of all types. These are not your average video games that you see at your local electronic stores, but independent video game creators to keep in the theme of the independent films shown at the festival. Featured at the Highball Ballroom, this venue was filled with games that made many people feel as if they had stepped back in time to an old fashioned arcade. There were so many games that many showed up more than once to try them all out.
The cost was only twenty dollars a day or free entry to all the games and panels included as well as the award show. For ten dollars, unlimited access was available for those who were not interested in anything but the games. With the sixty dollar pass, there was plenty of fun and games for all with the lines not too long and plenty of games to go around for the crowd. This pass also allowed for viewing of all of the films.
Keeping with the spirit of the event, the video games were judged and there was a competition and award show. Gamers who wanted to could go to panels and see the developers discuss their games and found out the background to the most popular games. Anyone who is not only a film lover but also a gamer had the best of both worlds at this year’s Fantastic Fest.
Some think the name should be changed to Funstastic Fest because there was just so much to see and to do. With all the films and the arcade to keep people entertained between the movie viewing, there was no need at all to go and find anything else to do. It was a great experience for everyone and tickets are already on sale for next year’s festival!
