Anyone who knows Jim Carrey movies knows that they are full of funny moments and memorable scenes. In Liar Liar Jim Carrey plays Fletcher Reede, a greedy, self centered lawyer who has focused so much on his job that he has neglected his son Max (Justin Cooper). When Max is granted his fifth birthday wish that his dad cannot tell a lie for one day, Fletcher’s world is turned upside-down. Witnessing a lawyer that is unable to tell a lie provides for some great comedic material. This article will highlight some of the funniest movie quotes and scenes from Liar Liar.
The Impound Lot Scene
The setup of the first scene is when Fletcher convinces his ex-wife Audrey (Maura Tierney) to drive him to the impound lot after his car was taken due to his erratic driving and unpaid parking tickets. At this point in the film Fletcher is unable to lie based on Max’s birthday wish.
Fletcher: You scratched my car!
Impound Lot Employee: Where?
Fletcher: [pointing to the scratch on the door] Right there!
Impound Lot Employee: OH… That was already there.
Fletcher: You – -LIAR! You know what I am going to do about this?
Impound Lot Employee: what?
Fletcher: Nothing! Because if I take it to small claims court, it will just drain eight hours out of my life and you probably won’t show up and even if I got the judgment you’d just stiff me anyway; so what I am going to do is piss and moan like an impotent jerk, and then bend over and take it up the tailpipe!
Impound Lot Employee: [throwing the keys to Fletcher] You’ve been here before haven’t ya?
The Police Officer Scene
Just prior to the scene above Fletcher is pulled over by a police officer. Fletcher, after having his honesty revelation, told his ex-wife Audrey to wait at her house until he got there. Wanting to share his great news right away he broke several traffic laws trying to get to her house quickly. Below is the dialogue between Fletcher and the police officer.
Police Officer: You know why I pulled you over?
Fletcher: Depends on how long you were following me!
Police Officer: Why don’t we just take it from the top?
Fletcher: Here goes: I sped. I followed too closely. I ran a stop sign. I almost hit a Chevy. I sped some more. I failed to yield at a crosswalk. I changed lanes at the intersection. I changed lanes without signaling while running a red light and speeding!
Police Officer: Is that all?
Fletcher: No… I have unpaid parking tickets.
[opening the glove compartment and groaning]
Fletcher: … be gentle.
The Beggar Scene
After having walked by the same beggar in the street on his way to the courtroom several times, Fletcher is now required to be honest and tells the beggar exactly what he thinks.
Beggar: Got any spare change?
Beggar: Could ya spare some?
Fletcher: Yes I could!
Beggar: Will ya?
Beggar: How come?
Fletcher: Because I believe you will buy booze with it! I just want to get from my car to the office without being confronted by the decay of western society!… Plus I’m cheap! AHHH!
