I’m always looking for something my grandchildren haven’t tried before as a special treat when they come to see me. Recently, while shopping at my favorite store — Dollar Tree — I found a new kind of fruit flavored candy called FunToos.
The candy comes in small packages so that you can make sure the kids don’t over indulge all at once. I appreciate that because, even though I want my grandkids to enjoy the fun things in life, I’m also conscious of their health.
While FunToos are a little high in sugar and carbohydrates, they do not contain any cholesterol, fat, or sodium. In this day and age I think it is important to cut anywhere you can so I’ll take what I can get.
There are 20 packets of FunToos in every rainbow colored carton. Since the carton sells for $1, that makes each packet a mere nickel. Now that is what I call a bargain!
There are 25 calories in each FunToos pack, which holds around 20 of the delicious little candy fruit balls. That equals about 7 grams per pack. The entire carton weighs 4.93 ounces or 140 grams.
One packet equals a single serving. Each serving contains 7 grams of carbohydrate and 6 grams of sugar. Those are significant numbers; hence the need to ration out this sweet treat wisely over time.
Ingredients include artificial colors and flavors, citric acid, carnauba wax, glucose syrup and sugar. Artificial colors include blue 1, red 40 and yellow 6. Flavors include black cherry, orange, mango and pineapple.
These candies would be great as a snack or candy treat. However, I think they would also be great for decorating cakes, cookies or gingerbread men. They are bright and colorful as well as tasty.
Greenbriar International, Inc. of Chesapeak, Virginia makes these snacks. That is the company responsible for most of the products sold through Dollar Tree, which is the only place FunToos can be found.
Here is my summary review:
Taste: 5 stars. FunToos may be artificially flavored but they sure taste like the sure thing. May favorite may well be the orange because it is tart and citrusy. Although the pineapple is pretty good too. I even like the black cherry, but I’m not too fond of the mango.
Freshness: 5 stars. The candies are sealed inside their individual cellophane bags to help maintain their freshness. Each flavor comes separately which is good because then kids can choose the flavor that best suits them.
Variety: 5 stars. FunToos only come in four flavors at the moment ‘” black cherry, mango, orange and pineapple. However, I bet if they turn out to be a hit, new flavors could be just around the bend. Berry flavors of blackberry, blueberry, raspberry and strawberry would be wonderful.
Nutrition: 3 stars. Let’s be honest about it. Candy is not really good for you, especially not in high doses. However, what I love about FunToos is that you ration them easily because of the individual bags. There are so many candies in each bag, kids won’t feel cheated either. But there is no getting around the fact that candy doesn’t have nutritional value. This one, however, also doesn’t have fat or cholesterol. That is at least a start in the right direction.
Green value: 5 stars. The packaging is biodegradable and the outer box could be reused in children’s crafts.
Packaging: 5 stars. The packaging of this product caught my eye right away. It is rainbow colored in bright shades of red, orange, yellow, green blue, violet, and fuschia. The carton is actually beautiful. Representations of the little fruit flavored balls are shown along with a picture of the individual FunToos packet. The packets show a representation of the fruit flavor held inside and carry on the rainbow colored theme. The mango and pineapple balls are yellow. The orange balls are, you guessed it – – orange. The blackberry cherry balls are a rich deep cherry color.
Storability: 5 stars. The carton is small at 4.5″ by 4″ by 3″. It should fit well into a kitchen cabinet or pantry. The individual packets are smaller at 3″ by 1.5″. They will fit well in a school lunch box, a pocket or just about anywhere you deem to put them.
Availability: 3 stars. Unfortunately, FunToos are a product made especially for Dollar Tree, which is the only place you will find them. They can; however, be purchased at Dollar Tree online as well as in their retail stores.
Price: 5 stars. I paid $1 for the carton of 20 bags. That works out to $.5 a bag.
Product purchase probability: 4 stars. I think my grandkids will want me to purchase more so I’m already thinking FunToos would make a great stocking stuffer for Christmas.
Final rating: 4.5 stars. This candy was better than I expected it to be
5 stars – outstanding
4 stars – good
3 stars – average
2 stars – below average
1 star – poor
