Before you can become a copywriter, you need to prepare yourself for the work ahead. Breaking into the world of copywriting is actually very easy, but succeeding as a copywriter in the long term is much more difficult. To become a copywriter, you need to be absolutely sure you are ready for all of the problems you are bound to experience.
Most People Are Terrible Writers
Why do people hire copywriters? The most common reason is that they cannot write very well themselves. If they had the skills to write both well and quickly, chances are they would simply do the work themselves and save the several hundred dollar investment. Companies and individuals hire copywriters because copywriters are able to do the work that they themselves cannot.
This is completely understandable. Obviously these clients are not going to pay you for work they could do themselves without difficulty. But there is a problem.
The problem is that your instructions are often going to be supplied in text form, either through email or in a job posting. In order to tell you what to do, the client – the client that has admitted by hiring you that they cannot write well – has to write out the instructions for their project’s needs. For those that are trying to become a copywriter, that creates considerable miscommunication.
Remember that before you become a copywriter, you need to prepare yourself for all of the issues that may arise as you break into the field. Miscommunication between yourself and the client is extremely common. Prepare yourself for the backlash, and never assume you know everything they need before you get started.
