So your child wants a military or hunting themed birthday party and you are at a loss for games to play. Most of the traditional birthday party games can be adapted to fit either theme with a little ingenuity. Consider the age group of the guests and whether your party will be indoors or outside and then start with a few of the games I found for a military or hunting themed birthday party.
Military or Hunting Games for Younger Kids
Pin the Medal on the Soldier – Use a poster of a soldier as the basis for the game. You can sometimes get these from your local recruiting office. Cut out and decorate medals from a piece of cardboard or poster board. Attach a piece of double-sided tae to the back of each medal. Make enough for each gust to have one. Then one-by-one, blindfold each child and point them toward the soldier poster hung on a wall.
Hot Grenade – This is a variation of Hot Potato that uses a toy grenade. Seat the kids in a circle and start some music. To keep the music in line with your theme, try using some military marches. They kids pass the grenade around and you randomly turn the music off. Whoever has the grenade when the music stops is out and play continues until only 1 child is left.
Tug of War – Divide the kids into 2 teams. You can divide them boys and girls, or dark versus light clothing. Mark off a line and have the teams stand on opposite sides. Stretch a rope over the line and have each team take hold of their end.
Military or Hunting Games for Older Kids
Marine Field Training – Set up an obstacle course in your back yard. Use boxes, old tires, twine, cones, whatever you have on hand to create a course. String barbed wire (twine) six inches above the ground for kids to crawl under.
Decode the Message – Use a simple number letter-exchange and create a secret message. Split guests onto 2 groups and have each team try to break the code. Make the message something fun like “Cake in 5 minutes!”
Grenade Launcher – Fill lots of water balloons and arrange various objects at different elevations. Then let kids take turns throwing the balloons at the targets. The soldier who hits the most targets wins!
