Come on over. Take a seat. There’s one right here for you by the fire. Feel the warmth of the fire on your skin as we celebrate this hallow eve. I’m glad you could make it as the story is just about to begin. The glow from the fire dimly lighting and shadows all around, move in close while I begin….
My story starts out like many others being that it happened long ago. In this very spot in fact. I bet you hadn’t even known that a tragic event had occurred here. On a night much like tonight.
A group of kids had entered the woods here and picked this same spot to have a campfire. Full of youth and vitality when they entered these woods but by daylight, only one of them would remain alive to tell the story.
They had decided that a campfire and a night of cheesy ghost stories would be the perfect way to spend Halloween this year. After all, they were too old for the trick or treating scene and the weather had been unseasonably warm. As it still is today, this campground was the place to be. The fact that they kept the campground open much later because of Halloween celebrations made it perfect for their plan.
They had arrived here, car loaded with tents and the usual assortment of junk food and beverages with plans for a night of cheap scares and sore backs from sleeping on a cold ground. They hadn’t known that someone or something else had also arrived here.
The parking area had only held a couple of cars when they had pulled in. They chalked it up to luck because it meant that the prime campfire sites would probably still be open. They hiked out to this very spot and began to set up camp. There had been six of them – 3 boys and 3 girls.
After they had set up their tents, one of them started a fire. As the night grew darker, the fire burned brighter and the night grew still. They roasted hot dogs and toasted marshmallows. Just like we have done. After everyone had eaten their fill, they gathered closer around the fire and one of them suggested they tell ghost stories.
They had been so engrossed in their celebrations that they had not noticed a silhouette in the distance. A silhouette that had been watching them intently. They hadn’t noticed as the shape moved in closer. The ghost stories continued. At one point, one of the girls jumped up and said she heard something. They laughed at her and teased her for being spooked.
She didn’t laugh with them and told another girl that she had heard the sound of branch breaking and what she thought sounded like someone taking a deep breath. She tried to ignore the sick feeling that was welling up inside of her. You know that feeling, the one you get when you know that something bad is going to happen.
Well, that’s how she was feeling and she couldn’t stop looking around while the others laughed and continued their stories. Before long, one of the guys stood up and announced that he needed to use the facilities, indicating a nearby patch of trees. As he walked off, he joked about being carried away by some wood monsters. They had laughed, all of them.
Did you hear something? I thought I heard something over there. Shine your light and see. Maybe my imagination is just getting the best of me. Perhaps, I should just continue with my story….
After awhile, they noticed that he hadn’t returned from his bathroom trip. One of them had gone over to the spot he had headed towards only to find nothing. He had leaned against the tree and felt a stickiness as he had called out to him. When he got back to the campfire, he looked down at his hands and had seen that they were covered in a red substance. A red substance that upon closer inspection appeared to be blood.
Before he had a chance to react or cry out to the others, something ran across the campsite in what seemed to be an incredible speed. He heard one of the girls cry out and then he heard growling sounds. A few more muffled cries and then the sound of something being dragged. The others all jumped up and huddled together. They spoke in muffled, terrified sobs and voices.
“Who’s there? What do you want?”
There was no answer, only silence. They made a quick decision to grab what stuff they could carry and run back for the car. As they frantically tried to gather their things, they heard an unearthly sound. They quickly forgot their things and started running. In their panic, they hadn’t noticed that they were surrounded.
Somehow, their attackers had moved in very silently and surrounded the whole campsite. There was nowhere to go. They moved back closer and closer to the fire. The same fire that had brought them so much warmth now taunted them with it’s flames.
From what they could tell, there were 5 of them. They knew they were outnumbered. But panic was setting in and they huddled and made the decision to take off running in different directions. The theory was that maybe one of them at least could get back to the car and go for help while the others kept running.
It was a horrible plan and they knew it, but they had run out of options and so, run they did. Everything happened so fast, momentarily confused, the attackers hesitated and we all got a head start. But, it wasn’t enough.
The sounds of the screams and other unimaginable sounds broke through the still October air, but I kept running. Waiting for the attack to come at any minute.
