No !! I will not plead guilty !! I trust the legal system.
“But nothing…!! We plead not guilty !! And no plea bargain !! No deals !!”
“Ok ok, but understand there is so much evidence against you we have an uphill battle. “
“How much evidence can they have? It has to be circumstantial. I’m innocent!”
“They have witnesses..!”
“They bought witnesses ! Who can witness someone who is not there??”
“They have prints !”
“I’ve been there before. I just wasn’t there during the crime.”
“You can’t verify your whereabouts “
“Neither can they. They can’t put me at the scene merely because I can’t produce a witness who saw me on the highway for 20 minutes. Remember, the burden of proof is on them…”
I remember the trial. It was a kangaroo court. Like a nightmare. It was like driving down the road rushing toward a head-on collision with a fully loaded rig, and not being able to stop it.
I had always been taught that the legal system was the best and fairest in the world. These proceedings proved that wrong…. Piece by piece they tore down the basic principle of justice.
By the time the jury went to deliberate, I was almost convinced that I was guilty. The prosecution had done a great job of manipulating the evidence, the witnesses and ultimately the jury with its own version of the events and fitting the circumstantial evidence to that version.
My attorney brazenly reminded me of his sage advice. I held on to what hope there was until the last minute.
“of the 1st count of murder in the first degree, we find the defendant….. not guilty…”
I just about shit myself…..
“of the 2nd count of murder in the first degree, we find the defendant….. not guilty…”
And so it went, 15 counts of murder, dismissed. The prosecutor was livid. After each respondent was read, he visibly shivered.
Seems the jury found that just the fact that those people had been seen with me did not mean I was responsible for their disappearance. That was the only evidence they could have had. I made sure the gators ate all the rest……
