I’ve been waiting for Jim Hendry to make a comment with respect to the work of interim manager Mike Quade, and he finally has, saying that Quade has done an “outstanding job.”
Carrie Muskat has posted an article on the Chicago Cubs’ website titled “Cubs GM says Quade is doing ‘outstanding job.'”
As Muskat reports, Hendry’s observations include his opinions that Quade is “…managing the game well; he’s managing personnel well and managing the people and the clubhouse well…”
And so he is. You don’t hear any type of groaning from the players. Obviously they can’t all have been happy with all of his decisions, especially the pitchers. That means Quade has the players’ respect. I’ve coached at the middle-school level, and I can tell you it takes a knowledgeable person to get respect from a team, especially of adults. Professional adults equal a lot of ego.
The Cubs are now 12-7 under Quade, which is, if I remember my basic math, a winning percentage a little better than .631. Granted, that is just 19 games, but Quade is using a lot of youngsters and people who haven’t played together much. Compare that to Division Leaders Tampa Bay at .608, Minnesota at .594, Texas at .559, Philadelphia at .579, Cincinnati at .569 and San Diego at .566. Quade isn’t doing too shabby, especially since this is his first shot at being the head honcho at the Major League level.
I don’t think that Quade was put in this position to see if he would work out for next year. I think he was simply put there for the moment until the “real manager” could be found. However, Quade has been a pleasant surprise. He has a large resume of experience as a minor league manager, including 17 years and 2,378 games.
As I’ve said before, however, I don’t see the Cubs passing on Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg. Sandberg is currently the manager at the Triple-A level ,but did manage for awhile here in Peoria with our Single-A Peoria Chiefs.
I’ll have to stick with that prediction. Quade may get a shot if Sandberg fails, but that is who I see getting the call. Still, Hendry making any comment at all has to give us pause.
