There are several ways to get rid of rust and make the chrome on your auto look (almost) like new. The first thing to do is find all of the rust that is hiding under paint and under the bottom of the automobile.
Look for small bubbles in the paint, this can indicate rust hiding underneath. And rust can be concealed in small cracks, underneath sealer, beneath the carpet and underneath the car itself.
Auto body rust repair is necessary as soon as rust is noticed. Neglected rust can cause permanent damage to the bodywork and it can make any automobile look bad. It is not difficult to remove rust and a few simple tools can get the job done.
Rust can start from a small chip in the paint, a dent, as well as the salt and chemicals used to melt snow in the cold regions.
There are several ways to prevent rust on cars, boats, trucks and almost any other vehicle.
Try these tips to prevent rust;
* Keep the vehicle clean and dry, a thorough wash one each week will help to keep rust away. This is especially important for those who drive on salted roads or live near the water.
* Regularly wash underneath the vehicle, including the wheels and behind the wheels.
* A regular waxing can help to keep a barrier between (some of) the causes of rust and the paint finish.
* Regular use of Jig-a-Loo, a water-repellent, invisible barrier can not only prevent rust, it also lubricate and loosen rust already on the vehicle.
* After washing, thoroughly dry the entire vehicle, as soon as possible. Take it for a drive to get rid of water on the frame.
* Check the trunk, engine, around the key holes and underneath the auto for signs of rust.
Once rust is noticed, it doesn’t take long to get it removed and repaired – if it is from the result of a neglected dent or scrape. After finding the rust spots, the first thing to do is; prepare the surface to accept the paint. A few tools are needed to remove the paint and to smooth the surface.
* Hand held grinder
* P150 grit sanding wheel
* P150 grit sandpaper
* Metal grinding wheel
* Painter’s tape
* Auto body primer
Prepare The Surface
Use the sander to level the surface. Continue sanding to remove as much of the rust as possible.
After the areas are sanded down and some of the rust and paint has been removed – use the metal grinding wheel to slowly and carefully remove the remaining rust. Unlike the grit grinder, the metal grinder can quickly remove a large amount of material – that can lead to too much material removed.
Once the sander has been used and the surface is smooth, it is time to sand the surface by hand to remove any tiny bits of remaining rust spots and to smooth the edges between the paint and the exposed metal. Sanding by hand will take a lot longer than using the sander wheels, make sure there are no ‘hills’ as the paint fade into the metal.
There is a huge problem going on under the automobile when the rust work up the sides. Extensive repair may be needed and it is more complicated than a weekend of do-it-yourself job. For best results, a professional may have to cut the rusted area out, make necessary repairs and match the paint and/or repaint the entire vehicle.
If there areas that can not be grounded down or sanded away without causing further damage, it is best to use a body filler – available at most auto parts stores.
Priming and Painting The Repairs
Use blue painters tape to section the areas that will be painted. Apply auto body primer in at least three very thin coats and wait at least 15 minutes between each coat. After the last coat, let the primer sit for 24 hours, or more.
After the paint is dry, take sandpaper and very gently sand the area by hand to completely smooth the surface. For a deeper finish, apply four very thin coats of paint and allow each coat at least three or more hours to dry. Leaving the last coat to dry overnight. After the paint is completely dry, thoroughly wash and wax the entire car to blend the paint with the repair.
If there are a lot dents and holes because of rust damage, cutting the areas may be the only way to repair the damage. For severe rust damage, a skilled professional will need to take a look because blades, air compressor tools and more equipment is needed that is available at an auto body repair shop.
To prevent rust, remain alert to the signs and causes of rust and repair any problem as soon a possible. These preventive measures can help keep your automobile on the road for several rust-free years.
