God is not a being who spends most of His time hanging out in the distant reaches of the galaxy, or in the highest towers of heaven away from humanity. Rather God, who is present everywhere, is much more interested in walking hand in hand with you during the moments of your daily life. Religion often stops at the point of concepts and belief systems about God, but a religion that is infused with spirituality goes beyond concepts and brings connection between the individual man or woman and the one God. Christianity makes the claim that not only is God interested in you, but that God was so interested in human beings that He became one! The Divine King became a human being so that people and God could truly be united on all levels. Regardless of whether you’re a Christian or not, you probably know the name of this person who unites God and humanity in His very own identity; that person is Jesus Christ.
Over the years I’ve initially gotten to know some people through e-mails and instant messenger communications via a computer. Through electronic correspondence and communication you can learn a lot about someone. However, when I finally met these people in person my experience of them moved from black and white to color. As human beings we are wired by design for a relationship with God. However, because of the tragedy of our world and our innate desire to choose our own way we need someone to turn on the color of our spiritual television sets, Jesus is this person. Jesus is the person who is always holding God’s hand and then reaches out for yours, and if you’re willing, introduces you to God. Jesus is the great cell phone tower that enables the innate ability of all human beings to dial into God to work. The very essence of Christianity is that the divine enters into our everyday experiences of making meals, driving to work, and playing with our children.
This is because God, the Author of the universe, decided to let Himself be birthed by a teenage girl, and become one of us. If human existence were so bad, if human beings were so bad, if our bodies were so evil, surely God would never have blessed all these things by entering into human existence in the person of Jesus Christ. Despite the Church’s failure to proclaim this message in the past, and sadly at times in the present Christianity is a very earthy, body honoring, and people centered faith. The bottom line is that God is always interested in getting up close and personal with you. So your challenge as a human being isn’t in getting God to be interested in you; God is immensely interested in you already. Your challenge is the same challenge that all people face; how do your position yourself so that you can notice God’s presence in your life?
You and I live in a crazy world that is difficult to understand, filled with smiling faces as well as tearful eyes, and a confusion of conflicting messages. Despite all of this there is a melody to the universe, there is a theme song to life, and the composer and conductor of that song is God. You and I have our notes to play that contribute to the great symphony of God’s purposes. Yet we will never be able to know the correct finger positions on our instrument that will cause our soul to play the right notes without personal connection to the Conductor. The good news is that this heavenly Maestro is not content to leave us in the vast sea of fellow soul musicians, but is interested in giving us private lessons. Great spirituality, which has throughout the centuries given birth to some of the world’s greatest music, is like any celebrated song. This kind of song not only connects to the life of a lone person, but unites that person with hundreds of others through their shared experience of listening to the same music and lyrics. Spirituality, which is living life based on the divine perspective, will not only unite your life to God’s story, but it will unite you to human beings everywhere, past, present, and future.
