Gigino Trattoria is an Italian inspired restaurant that has been around since 1994. It is located in the Tribeca area of Manhattan. This area of NYC reminds me of actually being in Sicily or Rome. A large portion of there breads and pastas are house made. This restaurant has a comfy family feel. This cozy quaint establishment is frequented by local big name celebrities. I have spotted a few in my dining experiences at Gigino. The movie “Dinner Rush” starring Danny Aiello was actually filmed in this establishment. There is also a guest appearance in the film form Luigi Celentano, the executive chef of Gigino.
The menu has tons of options for every type of food lover. From salads to pastas to seafood to poultry and even pork you will not be disappointed. One of the most popular items is the pizza which is brick oven and said to be some of the best pizza in New York. My favorite salad is the L’Esotica($12) which ingredients include hearts of palm, marinated artichokes, mushrooms, avocado, beans, tomatoes, and mozzarella. This is a perfect starter/appetizer.
As for pasta dishes I highly recommend the Capellini Sirenetta ($18). This dish is made up of angel hair pasta, shrimp and arugula in a light tomato sauce. I also recommend the Spaghetti del Padrino ($15) which ingredients include, julienne beets, escarole hearts, garlic, olive oil, and crispy crumbs. Either of these flavorful dishes goes well with fruitful Pinot Noir or a spicy Cabernet Sauvignon.
I have a few entree favorites that I would like to share with you. My first favorite is the Pollo alla Parmigiana ($24). This dish consists of baked breaded chicken with tomato, basil and melted mozzarella served over penne pasta. Another entree menu item worth ordering is the Salmone el Salmoriglio ($24) which ingredients include, grilled salmon over mesclun greens, Salmoriglio sauce (which is made up of olive oil, lemon, garlic, and oregano)and fresh tomatoes. Either of these dishes can be paired with a glass of Chardonnay or my favorite a light Sauvignon Blanc.
Pizza selections are endless and oh so tempting. My favorite is the Gorgonzola ($16). This can be ordered as an appetizer for the table or as an entree. The Gorgonzola pizza is topped with Grilled Chicken, Broccoli, Blue Cheese, Mozzarella, and Tomato. The perfect wine pairing would be a bold Cabernet Sauvignon or even a peppery Shiraz.
