Glenn Beck rally attendance estimates are still disputed. The lowest Glenn Beck rally attendance numbers are at 87,000, with the highest Glenn Beck rally attendance estimates over 500,000, at the least. Other projections are somewhat in between, at around the 300,000 mark. However, those predictions are getting less buzz, as the two extremes have been the most scrutinized — which is almost fitting for this event. Yet it remains uncertain if the right totals numbers were tallied by CBS or rally organizers.
When CBS News first gave their projection of 87,000, those at the gathering protested immediately. After the New York Times and NBC News reported that 300,000 were at the Lincoln Memorial, it gave them more momentum. However, even those high estimates from these liberal media icons may not be enough.
Some of the biggest Glenn Beck rally attendance numbers come from the event’s own organizers. Beck himself claimed on his radio show today that there were 500,000 people there. Joe Scarborough said the same thing on Morning Joe, but even their counting wasn’t as high as Michele Bachmann’s, who estimated up to a million.
Thus far, the Glenn Beck rally attendance debate is following a familiar formula. Beck and right-wing figures are claiming an extremely high tally, and accusing the left-wing media of trying to cover it up. This time, CBS News is the scapegoat for going as low as 87,000, especially since other sources besides Beck went higher.
But even the 300,000+ estimates might not be enough at this rate. Now that the Glenn Beck rally attendance numbers are projected as high as 500,000 to a million, even the 300,000 numbers seem too low for them. Beck even said that if the media are projecting 300,000 to 500,000, the real numbers are probably larger.
This entire debate is subjective, however, and not just because of political differences. The science of rally counts has been in dispute well before the Tea Party gatherings came along. After the National Parks Service stopped estimating crowd size years ago due to their low count of the Million Man Match, there aren’t many reliable sources for this issue.
Perhaps no matter how the Glenn Beck rally attendance numbers turn out, the event will go down as a Beck victory. Although Beck and Sarah Palin said a few things that got the left upset, they didn’t appear to make any bigger gaffes than usual. Since the focus is more on the attendance thus far, and since the crowd can once again claim a media conspiracy, Beck and company are likely celebrating regardless.
