“In God we trust!” perhaps the most famous phrase in the US. I am inclined to think that Americans are spiritual people, or should I say, Godly people? It goes without say that the principles and ideals that unite the Americans originated from biblical teachings, for the Bible was central to drafting the constitution. I therefore embarked on a journey to discover the God of America.
Outside the US, and more specifically in third world countries, many people view US as a land of flowing milk and honey. A land where one can realize a dream only if you work for it, a land whose value of return on labor is worth the effort. A land abundantly blessed with infrastructure, systems and institutions that support its glowing economy, and sets individuals free to pursue their desires. People would do anything to get to the US. I have heard and seen others sell off their property, hold fundraising drives, just to fund their ambitions to come to the US. Evidently, seen across the US – Mexico border, people readily risk their lives to cross the merciless Arizonian desert. The Numbers are enormous, sparking a never ending immigration battle in the congress.
America is truly blessed, that although the recession had some long lasting impact, its economy still remains strong compared to other big economies cross the world. In my observation, maybe the founding fathers invoked the God of America by inscribing the phrase, “In God we trust” on its currency. More so, President Obama tends to end his speeches with the phrase, “God bless America”, more frequently, compared to previous presidents (Maybe he is inspired by Chris Rock’s movie – Head of the State).
How Godly are the Americans? Is a question that lingers a lot in my mind, how they relate to their God. Looking at this religious issue, you will agree with me that quite a good number of churches, as well as mosques, synagogues, and other centers of worship have been erected across the US. However, CNN featured an article reflecting how unknowledgeable Americans are regarding their faith. For a country so blessed, how godly they are, remain a puzzling question.
