Every year at this time people make New Year’s resolutions. This New Year I will make a difference in saving the earth. This year I will contemplate on what is green and how I can make a smaller carbon footprint.
I already practice green principles, so how can I improve? Today I am researching what I am going to do in January. I need to have a plan in order to be successful. I will highlight four areas in which I choose to focus in the coming year. They are the recycling of household waste, the use of plastics in the kitchen, having a compost pile and eating vegan.
Mondays are recycling day in my neighborhood. I have a green bin full or recyclables to set out at the curb. I am good at fulfilling this goal. We also have a neighborhood recycling and reuse facility that I have never been to. I will need to visit there to see what else is available. Don’t know what to recycle? Find out. Look online and then see what is offered nearby. I can take items to the recycling facility that I can’t put on the curb. Things such as paint, automotive fluids, and glass will need to be driven and dropped off to be recycled.
I want to do better at avoiding the use of plastics at home. Plastic is made from petroleum, a nonrenewable resource. How can I accomplish this? I need to be using more reusable containers of glass, ceramic, or stainless steel. Any material that can be easily recycled such as paper, glass, or metal cans will be good choices for going green. Cloth totes or string bags are green and should be used in place of plastics.
Getting a composter or making a compost area in my yard is a green option. This will be another of my resolutions. There are many websites I can turn to for information. I need to have a kitchen bin to put food scraps in to take outside. There has to be a specific area designated in the yard. This is going to be tough for me to accomplish. No one said it would be easy did they? Worms can also be purchased to help with the composting. This is sounding more interesting all the time.
Being vegan is a very important part of our green footprint. Some people cannot accomplish this difficult task. More importantly we should do our best at flirting with this goal. I have not eaten meat since last February, yet I am still not a vegan. I eat eggs and dairy products. This is a resolution of mine to continue. I feel very good about what I have accomplished toward becoming vegan. This is a very personal and difficult choice that sometimes affects your family. It is also a rewarding resolution.
Are you prepared for your New Year’s resolution? Let’s make this year different. Will yours be a resolution for saving the earth or at least a step in the green direction?
