It looks like the exploitation of her children may finally be blowing up in Kate Gosselin’s face. Forbes.com recently reported that two of the sextuplets, Alexis and Collin, have been expelled from their private school in Pennsylvania. The 6-year-olds were accused of displaying acts of anger through bullying and name-calling. Hopefully this incident will make Kate think twice about the reality television star lifestyle that her children have unwillingly been catapulted into.
Does fame negatively impact school life? No, I do not feel fame itself disrupts a child’s educational life. I think if a child actor has responsible parents, he/she will be able to maintain a healthy balance when it comes to the celebrity, personal and school life.
There are a number of young celebrity actors who have maintained a wonderful school experience while also being in the limelight. Award-winning actress Dakota Fanning began acting at the age of 5 and is currently 16 years old. She has been in the films The Cat in the Hat, War of the Worlds, The Runaways, New Moon and Eclipse. During her active acting career, she has been able to balance attending school and participate in extracurricular activities. She currently attends Campbell Hall School in North Hollywood, Calif., and is on the varsity spirit cheerleading squad. According to omg!, Dakota was recently crowned Homecoming Queen.
Daniel Radcliffe is another example of a child star who has been able to live a fairly normal life while being a celebrity. He is best known as the character Harry Potter. Radcliffe made his acting debut at age of 10 in the BBC’s televised two-part adaptation of the Charles Dickens novel David Copperfield. Radcliffe attended the Sussex House School in London and then studied for AS levels at the City of London School.
As a parent, if my children were to enter the celebrity world, it would be my responsibility to ensure they were able to continue the activities they enjoy, along with their education and be able to function in society without the paparazzi stalking them. I do not feel Kate Gosselin has put her children first. It is apparent that she chooses to expose her family’s dirty laundry in front of the world through her reality show and other media avenues. Meanwhile, the true victims, her children, are suffering and will continue to suffer while Kate enjoys the attention and money.
