What’s going on in the Gowanus Canal is no different from what’s always been going on in the Gowanus Canal. There seems to be a petrified version of forward motion which keeps things just the way they are even if the sentiment is there to make change. So the blog The Ocean of Blood (1) is taking things up on their end to make a difference.
According to a recent blog post on the site, “we are removing malignant marine life from our boats at Serett Metal works! Barnacles, tube worms, and the Gowanus Canal are actually eating away at our stainless steel pontoons! Incredible!” Well not really all that incredible actually but still, good that these conscientious citizens of the planet and of the Gowanus sphere are noticing and doing something about it.
The Ocean of Blood even invites anyone to come have a look. “If you are in the Brooklyn area and would like to visit our build site, call 917-740-0863 to find out our schedule. We work here more days than we don’t so you are likely to find us here, right by the Smith & 9th St stop. You can come hang out, paint, take pictures, share cake, and see our boats in progress.”
Somebody is trying to do something and while there are no easy fixes for the Gowanus Canal, The Ocean of Blood is at least breaking that petrified mold and moving forward in some kind of a meaningful way.
