Recently a post on the popular Park Slope Parents blog claimed the mother of a friend was “brutally attacked” during an attempted rape.
“She was beaten so savagely that her children could not recognize her,” the post stated on the popular blog. “Evidently, the police said this is the fourth such attack in the neighborhood recently.”
The news caused an outpouring of chatter and concern amongst the community reported The Brooklyn Paper. However, according to the 78th precinct, the crime was not a rape, but a robbery.
Early in the morning two thugs attacked a shop owner on Eighth Street between Second and Third Avenues in Gowanus. The store owner reportedly fought off the attackers before briefly losing consciousness.
The founder of the parents blog, Susan Fox, eventually put the story to rest after doing a little investigating. She called the incident a “damn game of telephone,” and stated that the 78th precinct ‘absolutely discredited” the blog post.
There have been four rapes so far this year in the precinct, which may have been the source for the information spread by the errant poster.
The morning robbery was disturbing enough.
