GreenHomeNYC sponsored the event and the folks came out in droves. According to Brooklyn Eagle (1) “an estimated 1,500 people attended Brooklyn’s first Green block party in Gowanus on October 2.” The mood was totally chilled out and the people were all there to learn and share and keep our planet beautiful.
Out on Third Street between Hoyt and Bond was where the action went down and one of the event sponsors, Hudson Company, showcased their “Third + Bond residential townhouse project.” This development “is expected to be LEED-Gold rated and Energy Star certified.” That was good news for all the jazzy Brooklynites who wanted to learn new ways of keeping their carbon footprint down and their planet beautiful for generations to come.
Tours of the development were peppered with instructions for things like “learning how to install and plant a green roof, create a worm-bin compost, complete an energy audit, and learn(ing) how to capture and reuse rain water to water plants.”
Gowanus is not Brooklyn’s most sparkling neighborhood but the turnout at this event showed the communities interest in turning that picture around.
